Does anyone really believe this contract wasn't about the money? With Comrie it's always about the money! He held out numerous times here in Edmonton for more money, he even held out before ever playing a single game in the NHL!
The way I see it, this off-season (like last) he didn't have a whole lot of options. If there was a $2 million contract out there for Comrie he would have been all over it. Last year Edmonton ponied up more than anyone else would and that's why he signed here. This year even $1.25 million was out of reach! He may have been able to find more than $500k (not much more) but his Plan B was to find a team shallow on the wing with good centerman who can possibly make him look good enough to help him get more money next year.
The thing I'm sick of is hearing his lame reasoning behind the contracts he's been signing. Last year's bit about "unfinished business in Edmonton" was as easy to see through as Luongo's 5-hole in the playoffs. This year's bit is even worse. What other player tries so hard to justify his contracts?
The last thing I'll say is that Comrie's stay in Pittsburgh will likely go the way of Petr Sykora and Miro Satan. They could not rejuvinate their careers with Crosby/Malkin and neither will Comrie. While he's sitting on the IR someone else will step up and fill his role and when/if Comrie returns he'll end up in Pittsburgh where he was in Edmonton: plummeting deeper and deeper into the minus on the 3rd/4th line.
Good riddance!
